Although the G11 cost more than I had intended to pay it has proved to be a good choice and, just about, worth the money. Being used to a film camera I found that the transition was straightforward. This is partly down to the pull out and tilt and swivel screen, which means that it is not necessary to hold the camera in front of your face to look at a vertical screen, (which feels really weird after many years with a traditional camera) instead you twist it to horizontal and look downwards. Much more comfortable. It is pretty clear and the brightness can be increased at a touch of a button. There is also a rather small optical viewfinder which is similar to a 35mm camera. The screen is obviously as large as Canon could make it and the downside is that with nearly a dozen buttons on the back it is very easy to press one of these by mistake. Small fingers would be an asset.
The ISO setting and exposure compensation are on the top and this reduces the need to access the menu. The images appear well balanced and natural, the exposure seems spot on. There are of course numerous features but one in particular is worth mentioning. The software to modify the contrast/colour saturation can be applied immediately after the image has been shot, I find this very useful for landscapes.
There are a couple of negatives. Canon do not supply a printed manual, this put me off buying for a while but then I found an excellent printed guide which could well have been written by them, it is part of the Magic Lantern series of guidebooks. The other negative is the weight, 355grams or nearly 1lb, but it does fit into a pocket without any risk to the lens or screen.
For any film camera enthusiast switching to digital the G11 has a lot to recommend it, it is also a good solid camera in every respect. |

Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera (10 Megapixel, 5x Optical Zoom) 2.8 inch LCD
This is my 3rd Canon Camera. Each one seems to die exactly 3 years after purchase... My eyesight is poor; I need the pull-out back flap to help me see and to focus.
I already knew from previous review of G11 on Amazon that there was a weight issue. I can confirm this... The issue means nothing more than the simple fact that the hand (in my case the right one) needs to (re-)learn how to balance...
[update 2010-07-01] I should also say that,
in addition to poor eyesight, I am arthritic in both hands.
This means I am liable to drop the camera...
Earlier I add a wrist strap for my old Powershots.
This new G11 comes with an "around the neck" strap which
is definitely NOT suitable for me.
Was I tempted to wait for the G12???
But of course...
Why did I buy the G11 then???
Because I need to shoot stuff every day.
[update 2010-07-01] Although not as "handy" as my previous
Canon Powershot cameras, I am still pleased with my decision.

| Just back from a trip to Brittany France with this camera.....the results are far better than I anticipated. The detail,contrast and colour are without doubt the best of any digital camera I have owned. I shot both in JPEG and RAW. If you are hesitating about buying this camera...hesitate no longer, you'r wasting precious photo time!!!!! Only downside is that controls on the back of the camera are easy to accidentally operate. |

| When I bought the Canon Powershot 11 I was looking for a camera to take quality images of my paintings which could be used for producing quality prints. I have taken shots of the whole painting but also close up cropped shots where the surface texture is clear. I have been very happy with the clarity and detail I am getting. I also wanted a camera that I could take out with me in my bag to take photos for research for my paintings. I often do this surreptitiously so that people are unaware that I am taking shots so the swivelling viewfinder is an excellent feature to have when I am doing this. The camera is larger than the little digital Sony I used to have but is not as large as an SLR which is the other type of camera I considered buying. I do not want to look like a photographer with one slung round my neck, it is a research tool and as such I want it to be discreet, and so it is. The only thing I would say is that when gripping the camera with my right hand there are a few buttons which I often grab too, but this has not triggered anything I didn't want to happen. If you flip out the viewfinder then there is space there to hold. I have also been very happy with the performance in darker situations, the camera makes the most of the light and this I believe has been possible by lowering the megapixel rating from the previous model. All in all it has satisfied my needs. |
